Careers Outside of Philosophy

Philosophy is one of the quintessential liberal arts. Its value is nowhere near limited to those who will choose to continue within the profession. Instead, because it cultivates fundamental intellectual aptitudes and dispositions, rather than a particular vocational skill set, it is worthy intellectual preparation for a multitiude of professions. Don't believe me? How about this New York Times' article? As we argue in "Why Study Philosophy?" philosophy majors as a group tend to be among the most competitive on virtually all graduate study exams--surpassing even English majors on the verbal portions of these exams. This opens many doors for philosophy majors.

Law School

Philosophy majors (as a group) have traditionally done extremely well when applying to law school. If you are considering Law school you should contact John Koritansky (email) who advises pre-law students at Hiram for further advice and information.
