Parents

Parents often have questions about career planning at Hiram College. We have written this section of our website to inform you about the programs and services we offer students, provide information about the importance of liberal arts skills in the workplace, and suggest ways you might help your student do effective career planning. In addition, we hope you will share some of your professional expertise and contacts with us as we work to assist your students.

We offer the following career planning opportunities for students:

  • career counseling, vocational testing and computerized guidance (SIGI Plus)
  • career resources here on our website (see the Student Resources section)
  • a Career Resource library of books on liberal arts majors and careers
  • classes on career exploration and job search skills
  • internship resources and advising
  • alumni mentoring and shadowing
  • graduate school information and advising
  • employment resources such as resume workshops, practice interviews, campus recruiting, job listings, and career fairs.

During the first year, the Career Assistants make two presentations to all first-year students about choosing and exploring majors and the importance of internship experience. Information is provided both in an e-mail and a printed newsletter on a regular basis to keep students informed about opportunities and deadlines. Residence hall programs are offered frequently.
