Tom Mulligan is entering his fourth year as the Director of Athletics and Exercise/Sport Science at Hiram College. Mulligan oversees the day-to-day operations of Hiram's 20 intercollegiate sports teams, the Exercise/Sport Science academic program, as well as recreational services and club sports.Mulligan is a veteran of Division III athletics. He has spent most of his career coaching at the Division III level, including the previous 18 years at Hiram's NCAC rival Oberlin College in a variety of positions. Prior to joining Hiram, Mulligan spent 13 years as Oberlin's head track and field coach. He also served as the assistant director of athletics beginning in 1999 and had an active role in the design and construction of Oberlin's John W. Heisman Fieldhouse.
During his tenure at Oberlin, Mulligan also coached cross country and was an assistant football coach. Prior to beginning his coaching stint at Oberlin in 1984, Mulligan was the head football coach at Marietta College (1980-83). He also served as head track and field coach and assistant football coach at a number of Division III schools, including: Kenyon College (1978-80), Ohio Northern University (1975-76), and Heidelberg College (1973-75). Mulligan also spent time as an assistant football coach at Ohio Wesleyan University and Bowling Green State University.
Mulligan earned a B.A. in Health and Physical Education from Ohio Wesleyan in 1971 and an M.Ed. in Health and Physical Education from Bowling Green.
Mulligan and his wife, Diane, reside in Aurora. They have three grown children.
Assistant Director of Athletics/Senior Woman Administrator
Ellen Dempsey

Ellen Dempsey is entering her second year as an Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator at Hiram College. In addition, she is entering her fifth season as the head coach of the volleyball team.Dempsey has led the volleyball squad to a school, single-season wins total in each of her four seasons, including the 2003 team which went 27-8 and finished second in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Additionally, Dempsey has twice been named the NCAC Coach of the Year (2001, 2003).
Dempsey has over 16 years experience in coaching and administration. Prior to coming to Hiram she was the Assistant to the Athletic director at the University of Maine. She also spent six seasons as the head volleyball coach at Ohio University, winning a school record 94 matches from 1994-1999.
Dempsey earned her bachelor’s degree in natural sciences from Michigan State University and also earned a master’s degree in exercise science at Northern Michigan University.
Dempsey resides in Mogadore, Ohio.

Jim Johnston

Jim Johnston is entering his fourth year as an Assistant Athletic Director at Hiram College and his 17th year as the school’s head athletic trainer.A National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) certified trainer, Johnston is responsible for the prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to all student-athletes involved in intercollegiate and intramural programs. In addition, he also coordinates the Exercise/Sport Science academic program.
Johnston holds a B.A. in health and physical education from Muskingum College and an M.S. in physical education from Ohio University.
He and his wife, Denise, have two sons, Josh and Ryan, and reside in Southington, Ohio.
